Miss Saberwal and Mrs O’Sullivan welcomed school council today for the first official meeting of the school year (the very first meeting focussed on our new school charity – Guide Dogs for the blind). The school council discussed what their roles were within school and how they can communicate with their classes about ideas to improve our school community. Some school council members already had suggestions in their boxes so school council discussed those (e.g. new football clubs, Christmas activity ideas and eve a request for a swimming pool!). The school council were very mature in deciding which of the idea we should put forward official requests for and we discussed how different factors play a part in making such decisions (logistics, space, budget etc.)

The new school council members met to discuss our new school charity! We looked at a presentation of different charities and the work that they do. We discussed charities that are important to people in our community and each school council member took a vote to help decide which charity the school should raise money for this year. They voted for ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’ – a wonderful charity that trains dogs to help and support those with visual impairments. We learnt that one person an hour goes blind in the UK and we feel very special to be supporting this great charity. You might see a guide dog on the Barnfield School site this year … if you do see it, please be sensible and remember that the dog is working! Of course, you can always introduce yourself to its owner and let her know who you are.
