Art and Design

We use Kapow Art and Design curriculum to support our children’s knowledge and understanding in this area of learning.

At Barnfield, we place great emphasis on creativity, we strive to ensure that all children are given the opportunities to stimulate their own creativity and imagination. A high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire, and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft, and design.

Art at Barnfield follows the Kapow scheme of learning. Through this, pupils learn about a variety of techniques and artists, enhancing their artistic outcomes. Children are given opportunities to experiment with a variety of mediums and are encouraged to become an artist in their own way.

Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn and build on the formal elements of art, these include: colour, line, form, shape, texture, tone and pattern. They are also given opportunities to develop their artistic skills in drawing, painting and craft as well as look closely at the work of a range of different artists.

Key knowledge is mapped across each year group and our curriculum ensures that learning is developed progressively. Skills are revisited several times across a child’s time with us; by building on previous foundations, each area can be explored in increasing depth, extending the level challenge for our children. Each child has a sketchbook, which they use to record their ideas and develop their skills. These sketchbooks provide an insight into each child’s creative process and shows their journey to their final piece of work.

Alongside our curriculum, we celebrate and raise the profile of art by holding our annual whole school creativity week. During this time, we focus on one theme across the school, discussing meaning, style and exploring different techniques before producing a final piece of artwork which reflects individual’s interpretations to the theme. This week culminates in a gallery event where we share and celebrate children’s work.
