Sport at Barnfield

This year, one of our main priorities is to raise the profile of sport at Barnfield. Our aim is to attend many events across Barnet, increase pupils’ participation and develop the skill of leadership in our children. Physical Education is a very important part of children’s development. Not only is it brilliant for physical health, school sport can be great for pupils’ mental health as playing sport regularly can improve children’s overall emotional wellbeing. Research shows that there is a link between playing port and self-esteem in children.

This page will document Barnfield’s sporting achievements and involvements this academic year.

Barnfield FC

Training

This year, Barnfield’s Year 5 and 6 mixed team are training weekly at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre. This is the first year that we have had regular training on astroturf and so far, the children have loved it! Mr Gomes is taking the team through some passing, shooting and ball work drills before the move onto a game to practise match situations.

Broadfields away

01/11/23

We travelled to Broadfields for our first match of the year in the Martin Cup. The team had never played before, but were very excited. We made a brilliant start, playing some nice football and scoring an early goal but unfortunately, some powerful strikes from one of their players saw us lose 5-2. Despite this, there were some very encouraging signs and resilient performances. We look forward to our next game and eagerly await our match against Broadfields in the league!

Orion away

21/11/23

What. A. Match!

We walked to The Orion knowing that our recent record against them was not great. We scored an early goal through some excellent team play. Orion pegged us back to make it 1-1just before half time. In the second half, we really came into our own. The team showed incredible resilience, fight and determination. Our defence was like a brick wall, not letting The Orion’s attack through. In front of goal, we were ruthless. A hattrick from our striker saw us beat The Orion 4-1 – a win against them for the first time!

The team were filled with pride and a new-found confidence. Bring on the next game!

Goldbeaters away

30/11/23

Once again, we found ourselves playing a local derby at The Orion – this time against Goldbeaters. There was a little extra interest here, with our Headteacher Mrs Goodwin having worked there in the past!

We got off to a quick start, scoring 2 early goals. A tighter period saw the score go to 3-1. The second half was more end-to-end, but Barnfield FC defended well once more and were clinical in front of goal leading to a brilliant 6-3 win! Two hattricks from our strikers gave us the 6 goals. Well done to everyone in the team. The table looks good so far! Roll on our next match against Fairway Primary.

Broadfields

12/01/24

Our first comeback of the season.

With only two games left in the league and with so much at stake, this was an edgy affair. Broadfields scored an early goal against the run of play. From then on, Barnfield controlled the game and had countless efforts to no avail. The team could have lost hope, but showed great resilience and determination. With only 15 minutes left, Barnfield secured a scrappy equaliser. We pushed for the winner and it finally came with 5 minutes to spare. A brilliant comeback and one that should leave the team filled with pride! One more game to go…

Deansbrook

19/01/24

Barnfield FC win the league!

In our final league game, we knew we needed a draw to win our league. It could have been and edgy game due to this, but the team performed brilliantly! They chased every ball, kept the ball well and took our chances. The final result was 7-0 to Barnfield and we go into the Barnet Semi Finals with confidence. Well done to all children that have taken part. We are very proud of you all!

Bronze Ambassadors

04/10/23

Four of our Year 6 pupils attended the Bronze Ambassador training at Hendon Leisure Centre. Here, the learnt how to lead on physically active games by discovering the STEP principle. They explored how the Space, Task, Equipment and People can change to adapt an activity. At the end of the session, they received a Sports Leader badge and returned to school ready to lead on activities with younger year groups. Well done Year 6s!

Boccia

01/11/23

We took 5 children along to the Boccia event at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre. This was a festival based event where pupils were introduced to the game of Boccia and played mini matches against other schools. Boccia is a game where players throw balls from a seated position to land as close as possible to a white ball marker – known as a Jack. The event was aimed for pupils with special educational needs in order to make sporting events inclusive to all. The children did brilliantly well to learn a new game and compete against other schools. Well done Barnfield!

Year 3&4 Dodgeball

24/11/23

On Friday 24th November, we took two teams of Year 3 and 4 children to the Dodgeball Festival at Copthall Leisure Centre. For many, this was a first ever Barnfield sporting event. The festival was action-packed and fast-paced! The two teams of eight thoroughly enjoyed themselves and competed with great enthusiasm. They did the school proud and, although the festival wasn’t competitive, played with a great attitude. Well done to everyone that took part!

Barnet Bar No One

29/11/23

A group of children represented Barnfield at the Barnet Bar No One tournament at Hendon Leisure Centre. The inclusive event was such a brilliant experience for the children who went, who got to take part in a range of sporting activities and even got to have a go on some rowing machines! They also tried their hands at golf, bowling and much more! Well done children.
