Sport at Barnfield

At Barnfield, our focus over the past few years has been to raise the profile of sport across the whole school community. Our staff are passionate about sport, physical health, and fitness, and they work hard to promote Healthy Me – one of our five core school principles. We want every child to enjoy physical activity, feel confident taking part, and recognise the value of sport in developing teamwork, resilience, and wellbeing. A particular emphasis has been placed on raising the profile of sport for girls and for SEND learners, ensuring that opportunities are inclusive, accessible, and inspiring for all.

Sport also connects closely with our other principles. Pupils show an Ambitious Me mindset by aiming high in competitions and striving to improve their personal bests. Through dance, gymnastics, and team games, they develop a Creative Me approach, finding new ways to move and express themselves. Children embody Curious Me by exploring a wide range of sports, discovering talents and interests they may not have tried before. Above all, sport nurtures Empathetic Me, as pupils support teammates, show respect to opponents, and celebrate each other’s achievements.

To support our commitment to sport, we buy into the Barnet Partnership for School Sport (BPSS), which allows our pupils to attend a wide variety of inter-school competitions and festivals throughout the year. This gives children the chance to represent Barnfield proudly while trying out different sports in a supportive environment.

A major step in promoting sport at Barnfield has been the development of our astroturf pitch, which has transformed both PE lessons and our extra-curricular offer. The astro is used daily for lessons, sports clubs, and lettings, and has given our pupils a high-quality space to train and play.

We are proud to provide a wide variety of sports clubs for children of all ages. From dodgeball to football, cricket to badminton – and much more – there is something for everyone to enjoy. These opportunities help us to nurture a lifelong love of sport and physical activity across our school community.
