Music

At Barnfield Primary we use the Charanga Musical School Scheme. The scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum and supports our principle of learning – ‘Creative me’. Our children thoroughly enjoy their music lessons and study artists from Abba to Bon Jovi

Teachers plan for music lessons to be fun and inspiring, engaging the children with songs, lyrics and movement. We strive to ensure our children feel able and confident to be reflective and expressive; developing their own appreciation of music with the opportunities we provide as a school to listen and appraise varied compositions. Charanga supports children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

During music lessons children are given opportunities to learn music specific vocabulary in a meaningful context and apply skill and given chance for collaboration through composition.

The school provides opportunities for children to take part in a wide range of musical activities and performances, we have singing assemblies each week and the children learn a range of songs to fit in with seasonal and PSHE themes. The children also enjoy performing songs as part of their class assemblies. In Autumn term 2022, we were fortunate enough to be chosen to work with Disney Schools, a 3 year project to support our commitment to raising and promoting the profile of performing arts in our school.

All children are actively encouraged and given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument, from standard classroom instruments to individual instrumental lessons with the visiting peripatetic staff including Rock Steady. If your child is interested in playing an instrument, please contact the school office for further details.
