Music

We use Charanga to support our children’s knowledge and understanding of music and concepts.

The aim is for teaching and learning music to be fun, relevant and inspiring; central to each child’s academic, social and emotional development.

Charanga allows children to experience music from a range of historical periods, genres and traditions. There are regular opportunities for singing, playing instruments and exploring ways music can be notated. The musical elements of pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure are introduced in the foundation stage, and are then explored further and in more detail as the children move through school

At Barnfield Primary we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of music. This is one of our core principles of learning – ‘Creative me’.

All children from Year 1 upwards receive weekly music lessons. We have an outside provider that teaches singing for those who sign up and we use Rock Steady this is available to KS1 and KS2.

As a school we take part in the Barnet run Infant Music Festival where our KS1 pupils have the opportunity to learn a range of songs and perform to an audience.

Our KS2 children over the last 2 years have also had the amazing opportunity to audition and be part of the Disney Musicals in Schools project. Last year those who were selected went to watch the Lion King live show in London which led to make props and costumes and then performing parts of the Lion King amongst other schools and this year our KS2 cast are currently working towards their Frozen production.
